Part of what is known as "The Longabout" in Letchworth |
The test centre in Letchworth is located at Jackmans Place, just off Pixmore Avenue.
This test centre has its own car park, with four or five bays on each side of the car park - the ‘bay park’ manoeuvre would be carried out here and not in a public car park, as it is at Stevenage.
The first junction encountered after leaving Letchworth Test Centre is a cross road, which can be busy and quite a test of nerves early in the test.
The area surrounding the Letchworth test centre is a mixture of old and new housing estates with limited off-road parking, resulting in a mixture of wider open roads and those congested with parked cars.
Test routes sometimes go out of Letchworth and into Hitchin or Baldock, using the newish by-pass. This is a fast duel-carriageway with a deceleration lane as one of its exits, and an acceleration lane on the opposite side, both not unlike exiting or joining a motorway.
Other areas used for the tests are Arlesey and Stotfold.
New learners would be taken to a quiet area to start their tuition, the ‘Lordship’ estate or maybe ‘Jackmans’ estate. The Grange estate is used quite a lot, but can be busy, and with parked cars, so can be a good practice area for those learners who have already had a few lessons.
